Sara Magdalene Sanderson

Sara Rogers Pribble Sanderson, 93, passed away on February 21st, at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Born in Michigan City, Indiana, on May 8, 1924, she came to Florida at an early age and to Jacksonville in 1942. Mrs. Sanderson retired from Maxwell House Coffee after 20 years in their data processing department. She was preceded in death by her adoptive parents, Thomas P. and Norma L. Martin, birth mother Anne Lucille Rogers Crowell, and birth father Bernard “Mac” Rogers; three brothers, Thomas, Donald and Charles Rogers; one sister, Kathy Geddis; and husbands, William H. Pribble, Sr. and Herman L. “Sandy” Sanderson, Sr.

      During her years in Jacksonville, Mrs. Sanderson was extremely active in community and volunteer activities, holding many leadership positions. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 88, from 1946 to 1970, and served as Unit President and District Chairperson. From 1949 to 1956, Mrs. Sanderson was involved with the Girl Scout Gateway Council as a Troop Leader, a Neighborhood Chairman and the first Pioneer Camping Director in this area. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Chapter 222. She was a lifelong Episcopalian and a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church for the past 30 years.

      Since 1986, Mrs. Sanderson was actively involved as a member of Home & Community Educators, Duval County Cooperative Extension Service. She served as both Secretary and President of the Whiteway HCE Club and for two terms as President of the Duval County Council. In 1998-99, Mrs. Sanderson was named the Outstanding Home & Community Education Volunteer, having given over 1,450 volunteer hours to her community. She was the recipient of the same award in 2010-11, adding another 2,400 volunteer hours to her record.

      During her later years, Mrs. Sanderson made afghans and quilts for each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Known affectionately as “GiGi,” to the latter group, these forever-hugs are a source of pride and comfort to her family.

      Left to honor her life are her sisters Kay Ruth Mitchell, Logansport, Indiana; Michele Mehsling, Trinidad, Colorado; and Donna Woodward; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Willis Capo of St. Augustine; daughter and son-in-law, Debra S. and Berton Brand of Slidell, Louisiana; sons William H. Pribble, Jr., and Donald P. Pribble, both of Jacksonville, and son and daughter-in-law, Charles T. and Shelonda Pribble of Centralia, Illinois; as well as 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

      Funeral services will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 7801 Lone Star Road, on Saturday, March 3rd at 10:00 a.m., with internment at Greenlawn Cemetery immediately following. The family will receive friends at Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Road, on Friday, March 2nd, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. At Mrs. Sanderson’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Foundation, 7801 Lone Star Road, Jacksonville 32211.
